Our fancy rats are handleable and friendly and arrive to us happy to be picked up and held from the get-go. Fancy rats make amazing pets for children from around 8 years old (with adult supervision) as properly socialised rats very rarely bite, and are incredibly affectionate, playful and are highly trainable and intelligent. Enclosures big enough for rats with narrow enough bar spacing to prevent escape when they're youngsters can be hard to find--in this case we recommend for 2 rats under 6 months old a cage at least 1m x 1m with multiple levels, platforms, climbing nets and ropes, hammocks etc. will do the job. For rats over 6mo who can enjoy bigger cages with wider bar spacing we recommend upgrading to a cage at least 1.3m tall.
